Australian Photography Tours - Burning Palms to Garie Beach Photography Workshops

A 'Trees to Sea' activity - the best of the best

Bush walking is available for visitors with little interest in photography who would like to walk in the rain forests with a local. Visit the Gwondana Photography Bush Walking reference website for additional information.

The Burning Palms walk was one of my first bush walks in Australia after my arrival as an immigrant in '77. To this day it is still my favourite walk because of its magnificent views, flora and fauna. I have walked this area any times during the following years and it never disappoints. We regularly visit this coastline for our morning and evening photography classes and workshops which figure predominantly on the pages of this website

The northerly access is from Garie Beach which means you will travel south across pristine beaches and rock platforms to Burning Palms missing out the descent from the cliff tops.

You pass through Palm Jungle and rainforest to the coastal belt to see stunning views along the Royal National Park coastline to the north and south along the Wollongong and Illawarra coastline.

We leave Burning Palms by the northern route and cross beaches, rock platforms to an aboriginal Midden. This is a place where the aboriginal people fished and caught shellfish leaving the remains on a pile. These locations are ancient, now protected sacred sites.

I have walked this area many times over the years and have seen Echidnas, Wallabies, Red Bellied Black Snakes, Brown Snakes, Pythons, Goannas and a number of species of bird of prey. The day we took these photographs on a recce only two days ago we saw a White Bellied Sea Eagle loaded down with a huge fish flying low overhead trying to gain height. It is truly an amazing place, a great favourite and in my opinion one of the best places to walk.

Burning Palms can be accessed on the way through to Garie beach by three different routes which all provide stunning landscapes and seascapes. The track from the south offers the greatest variation as you descend over a distance of 312 metres / 1023 feet over 6.3 km / 4 miles from the top of the cliffs to the sea at Garie Beach.

Walkers descending from Garrawarra Farm on top of the escarpment to the west miss the rainforest and Palm Jungle but reduce their walking distance by half and still see magnificent coastal views.

With or without a camera we think you will be delighted
